10 Air Conditioning and Heating System Tips for Homeowners
Want to stay safe and save on residential energy costs? AccuTech shows Pennsylvania consumers how...
- If you ever smell gas, do not use your cell phone, do not turn on any appliances or light switches, or perform any other spark producing action. Leave the premises immediately, and then call your local gas utility company, or 911 to report the odor.
If you have a disposable type air filter on your furnace or air handling unit, replace it with a new one every month during the summer and winter months. Higher efficiency air filters can be changed on a less frequent basis, depending on the type you have.
- Always check your circuit breaker panel before calling for HVAC service, to ensure that the power is on to your heating or air conditioning equipment.
- If you have a programmable thermostat, change the batteries when low to avoid losing the programmed settings.
Set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature, and leave it alone! Constantly adjusting the thermostat only serves to waste energy. If you have a setback or programmable thermostat, don’t set the temperature higher or lower than 5 degrees from the normal occupied setting.
- Move all furniture away from radiators, supply air registers, and return air grilles, as much as possible, to facilitate proper convection and air flow.
- Seal all doors and windows with weather stripping or caulk. Even the small cracks can cause air filtration that can lead to higher heating and cooling costs.
Remove all foliage, weeds or anything else that may restrict air flow from around your outdoor heat pump or air conditioning condensor unit. Consider purchasing a cover for your outdoor air conditioner condensing unit – this will help keep it clean during the winter months thereby increasing the operating efficiency during the summer.
- If you have a heat pump system with back up gas or oil hot air heat, consider having your heat pump system modified to have the gas or oil heating system serve as your primary source of heat. This will serve to eliminate the cold blast of air typical to a heat pump system and can extend the life of your furnace.
